Center for Rehabilitation Program (CRM)

CRM is a fifty-six bed rehabilitation center where residents are exposed to inpatient management of a broad spectrum of diagnoses in medical rehabilitation that includes Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Hip Fracture Repair, Joint Arthroplasty, Spinal Cord Injury and other common disabling conditions. Besides the extensive inpatient exposure at CRM, residents perform PM&R consultations at Emory Hospital, receive training in temporary and permanent nerve blocks, and participate in Musculoskeletal, Muscular Dystrophy, and Post-polio Clinics.

Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital (WW)

WW is a unique hospital devoted to the provision of medical services for older adults. WW is located one-half mile from CRM and is a member of Emory Healthcare. Residents perform PM&R consultations, manage a modest number of inpatients on a specialized geriatric rehabilitation unit, and attend specialty clinics on geriatric assessment, dementia, incontinence and orthopedics.

Shepherd Center (SC)

SC is a free-standing model spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation hospital closely associated with Piedmont Hospital. Besides the comprehensive exposure to patients with spinal cord injury, brain injury, and demyelinating neuropathies, residents have access to the weekly brace and wheelchair seating clinics, urodynamics, outpatient pain management, acupuncture, intrathecal baclofen and fracture conferences. Residents gain knowledge in the long-term sequelae of spinal cord and brain injury through the outpatient clinic.

Grady Memorial Hospital (GMH)

GMH is a large inner-city hospital where residents are exposed to an array of outpatients. Electromyography are performed four days a week with emphasis on upper extremity disorders in the rehabilitation clinic as well as neuromyopathies in the neurology clinics. Residents work closely with therapists in the PT gym to consult on bracing and musculoskeletal issues as well as attending rheumatology clinics. The nationally recognized Acute Burn Unit at GMH offers residents experience in comprehensive burn management. Residents also have a unique opportunity to attend several outlying clinics specializing on disorders of the hand, ankle, and foot.

VA Medical Center (VA)

Residents get extensive experience in performing electro-diagnostic evaluations with accompanying electrodiagnostic teaching sessions. In outpatient clinics, residents see a diversity of musculoskeletal problems including neck and back pain with an emphasis on chronic pain management. Residents receive training in performing interventional procedures for pain management. Other outpatient clinics that offer valuable experience include amputee and orthotic laboratories. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the excellent research opportunities with VA Clinical services and the Atlanta VA Rehab R&D Center.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Senior residents spend one month in Cardiac Rehabilitation under the supervision of a Board Certified Cardiologist. Housed on campus at the Blomeyer Fitness Center, the cardiac rehabilitation rotation provides residents with experience in performing exercise stress tests and prescribing exercise programs for individuals with cardiac diseases.

Scottish Rite Children's Medical Center (Children's Healthcare)

Children's Healthcare is a hospital specializing in pediatrics with a 23 bed inpatient unit devoted to the rehabilitation of children with brain injury, spinal cord injury and neuromuscular diseases. All residents will have a three month rotation at Children's Healthcare including inpatient and outpatient training in pediatric rehabilitation. Outpatient clinics will include resident teaching in spasticity, orthopedics, orthotics and prosthetics and the caring for children with various congenital diseases.

Electives

Residents have two months set aside for electives. These are arranged in advance by the resident, the resident's advisor, and approved by the program director. Electives provide an opportunity to explore special interests such as research, pediatrics, sports medicine, occupational medicine, and training in techniques such as peripheral nerve blocks and fluoroscopic guided spinal injections. If a resident elects to spend time away from Emory, medical school policy specifies that he or she must forego Emory benefits including salary and insurance coverage for that time period.

Emory Orthopaedics Sport and Spine Center

Sports Medicine Rotation (Senior Rotation):

During this rotation, the senior resident will receive extensive exposure to the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and sports related injuries. The resident will have an opportunity to observe and perform peripheral joint injections. In addition, the resident will spend time evaluating patients with spine disorders and observing interventional spine injection procedures. Depending on the time of year, opportunities to participate in covering Emory University athletic events, including pre-participation physical exams, are available.

Spine Rotation (Senior Rotation):

The senior resident is expected to learn the evaluation, diagnosis and treatments for various back and neck problems. The resident will have the opportunity to observe and perform (under attending guidance) common interventional lumbar spine injection procedures. In addition, the resident will spend time evaluating patients with spine disorders and observing cervical interventional spine injections and more advanced interventional procedures. Time will be spent performing EMGs, as well.
