Rehabilitation Outcomes and Health Services Research
Medical, psychosocial,
and vocational outcomes associated with rehabilitation interventions
in multiple settings are being investigated among orthopedic patients, TBI
patients, end-stage renal disease patients, and stroke survivors. Prevention
of secondary disability is a central focus of this research. The relationship
between characteristics and functioning of the inpatient rehabilitation team
and patient outcomes is being extensively studied in VA settings.

In addition to individual investigator-initiated studies,
faculty participate in collaborative research networks that shape
policy and practice:
- The United States Renal Data System (USRDS) Special Studies Center on Quality
of Life/Rehabilitation is one of four centers that, along with
a national coordinating center, collects, analyzes, and distributes information
about end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The USRDS is operated under contracts
with NIH and CMS (formerly HCFA). Special studies conducted by the USRDS
evaluate treatment modalities, practice patterns, and access to services,
and contribute new data to the standardized national database. Nancy Kutner,
PhD, directs the USRDS Quality of Life/Rehabilitation Special Studies Center.
