Remarkable discoveries through research in the health sciences have provided new techniques for prevention of disorders and for acute treatment of injury.

Now the field of rehabilitation stands at the threshold of an even more exciting era of new discoveries, through basic research and development of new assistive technologies. Especially important, rehabilitation research focuses on ways to meet individuals’ needs within their usual living environment and on self-care treatments that can be carried out by individuals and their family members. The ultimate goal of rehabilitation research is to improve individuals’ quality of life by maximizing their functioning in home, vocational, and social settings.

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine has identified three core areas of research.
