Overview
Bruce Greenfield is trained as a physical therapist and is board certified as an orthopedic specialist through the American Physical Therapy Specialty Board. He received an advanced master's degree (MMSc) in orthopedic physical therapy from Emory University in 1985. For many years he worked in outpatient private practice, partnering with Scot Irwin, Robert Donatelli, and Michael Wooden, among others. During that time, he edited two textbooks for FA Davis on the Rehabilitation of the Knee and Shoulder. In 1995, he pursued a PhD degree in Educational Policy Studies with a major in Higher Education from Georgia State University. His PhD work focused on qualitative research and the examination of factors that characterize the moral practice of physical therapy. Currently, he is completing a Master's degree in Bioethics from Loyola University in Chicago and serves on the Emory University Hospital Ethics Committee. He continues to teach and pursue scholarly activities in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation, as well as examine and teach about issues related to personal and professional moral and ethical practice. His paper examining the role of emotions on ethical decision making was awarded the Section on Education 2008 Stanford Award recognizing the author of a paper containing the most influential education ideas. He was recently awarded the 2009 Stanford award for the article, Greenfield B, Goldberg A, Wolf S, Curtis K. The ethical, social, legal implications associated with genetics: implications for physical therapy education. J Physical Therapy Ed – 2008, 22; 1; 4 – 12. He is currently doing research about the nature of caring in clinical practice from both the clinicians and patients' perspectives. He is currently the Assistant Director, Division of Physical Therapy, Department of Rehabilitation, Emory University School of Medicine and Chair of the Admissons Committee. He was recently appointed to the faculty in the Center for Ethics, Emory University.
